What's Wrong With Applying Vinyl in the Winter?

Vinyl decals offer a tremendous return on investment when used as a part of your marketing mix. They are strong, come in hundreds of different colors, and can last between 5 to 10 years, depending on where they're applied. However, the temperature is essential for good adhesion when applying vinyl decals.

What's wrong with applying vinyl decals in the winter?

Because low ambient or surface temperatures decrease both the vinyl film's flexibility and the adhesive's initial tack, installing a decal when it is too cold might result in the adhesive bond failing. It needs to be a minimum of 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside for the vinyl to adhere properly. Vinyl becomes soft and non-pliable in the cold, making it challenging to stick to surfaces efficiently.

When putting a vinyl decal on a curved surface, it can also present problems. A higher temperature is required for vinyl to stretch over curved surfaces. If the weather is cold, they may not correctly stretch and could easily tear.

A decal will be easier to apply, and the adhesive will attach to the surface more quickly the closer it is to room temperature. Once the adhesive has bonded, the temperature shouldn't affect the adhesive's performance.

How to Prepare for Your Vehicle Wrap

Be Prepared For Your Upcoming Appointment

Before applying a vinyl wrap to a vehicle’s painted surfaces, we advise our clients to do a little bit of preparation. Dedicating extra time to clean your vehicle correctly can save any wrap company hours of prep work, reducing your total cost. Here are a few things you can do to prepare your car for a vinyl wrap.

Wash with mild detergent and water.

First, clean the surface with mild detergent and water the day before or at least several hours before dropping it off. All parts must be completely dry before installation, including under-body molding, wheel wells, and seams, to remove all hints of dirt, wax, and tar. NOTE: Dirty vehicles will result in a cleaning fee of $75 per hour added to the final invoice.

Dry your car after washing it.

Dry it thoroughly with a microfiber cloth. By washing your car 24 hours before it is wrapped, any areas you may have missed should also be nice and dry in time for wrapping. It is ready if the bodywork squeaks when you run your finger along it. But if it feels greasy, you will need to rewash it. It is worth taking the time and trouble to do a thorough job to ensure your new wrap looks fantastic.

Don’t use wax!

Protectants and waxes, and any other product that forms a barrier can interfere with the wrap’s ability to adhere correctly to the vehicle. Wax makes the surface very slippery, and vinyl doesn’t want to stick or stay attached to slick surfaces.

Pay particular attention to hard-to-reach edges.

Pay particular attention to ridges, edges, and seams as these areas are often neglected and may carry the most dirt and grime. To clean hard-to-reach edges, wrap a lint-free towel over a squeegee and proceed to swipe multiple times. Each swipe should be done with a clean portion of the towel until the towel shows no dirt on the swiped edge.

Have your vehicle inspected.

It’s essential to inform us about any spots that might have rust, peeling paint, or other issues that could affect the finished product. We encourage our clients to have our wrap technician see the vehicle in-shop to find potential problems and to have those areas repaired before installing a wrap.

Preparation is vital for a seamless wrap application. Following these steps in preparing your vehicle for a vinyl wrap will ensure the application is top-notch, with results that can quickly attract thousands of eyes on your car.

Remove extra accessories.

Examples include, but not limited to: ladder racks, awnings, bed covers, etc. If your vehicle has accessories that could impact the installation process, please be sure to remove them prior to your appointment.

Empty Truck Beds.

We need access to the body of the vehicle to wrap it effectively. Please don’t leave anything in the way that will hinder the process.

Tighten up all of your parts.

Services style vehicles please double-check that all rivets, screw heads, latches, etc are firmly tightened prior to brining your vehicle to be wrapped. We will not be responsible for checking fasteners prior to beginning the application process.

Remove emblems.

If you want to keep the manufacturer emblems, please remove them. If we remove them and they break or get lost, we will not replace them.

Safety starts by being Seen!

What are your options if you want to stand out our insure you're seen during low light times of the day. You may ask why this even matters but to first responders, tow companies, municipal vehicles, or even businesses that have cars function past daylight hours it can be a real concern. A statistic from seriousaccidents.com (a law firms website outlining lighting conditions and how they use them in your case.)is that despite 60 percent less traffic on the roads, more than 40 percent of all fatal car accidents occur at night. If you can design a vehicle to be seen sooner or from a greater distance these numbers change drastically.

With paint an expensive option was to add small pieces of crystal into the drying paint to allow it to reflect light back but the finish can be rough and not consistent. Reflective vinyl allows for single color, full spectrum of color, spot graphics, or a full coverage vehicle wrap to shine light back. Imagine driving down the highway when a stalled car is in a lane. No brake lights to warn you but a graphic on the rear window or trunk illuminating your head lights back at you in a safe manner. We've all seen a police car with a spot graphic vs an unmarked car on the road and how it affects us braking before we pass them a little fast over that posted speed limit.

In all seriousness though if you work in the early morning hours or evening you're doing yourself and the safety of your employees a disservice not to look at reflective vinyl as an option. With the ability to print any color on the vinyl material your vehicle wrap appears like any other wrap during daylight hours. Once the light begins to fade passing light reflects off the wrap and through the color illuminating it. There is a reason road departments use reflective patchwork on their clothing to insure they can be seen. This technology is further enhanced with our vinyl material. It comes down to safety and being seen sooner than later!

Most states even require for first responders to have at least certain aspects of the car reflective as a bare minimum. Give this a thought when trying to look at budgets on equipment and how you may be able to make it go further. The cost to do a full reflective or even a partial reflective paint area surpasses the cost of a vinyl wrap. On average one 24"x24" graphic made from reflective vinyl and installed on car will have a price of $150 - $250 while a painted graphic with reflective dust added will run you $500-$1000. This price gap drastically changes when you think of 50% to full coverage of an ambulance or police cruiser needing reflective material. A full wrap in reflective can be half the cost or even better than painting that same unit. The time frame to design, print, and install vinyl wraps is also another point of contention when looking at having a typical vehicle installed in 2-3 Days for a full wrap. Typically the same design with paint will take 5-7 business days with a simple design that is not airbrushed for fine gradients or details.

Coming out of Covid and with supply shortages, new vehicle sales have been affected. In the larger tractors, this has led to used vehicle purchases or the manufactures only delivering in white paint to speed up getting new rigs on the lot.

Well if your whole fleet is red and the only option is white what are you to do? A good logo is a refined and distilled visual representation of your company to your target audience. Rather than forcing the whole story into a small space, they convey the essence. Clean design lends to quick recognition, clarity, and memorability. Your audience should be able to register your mark from a distance, or while driving by. Adding too many details or elements can take away from the clarity of your message, and even cheapen your brand.

A good designer thinks ahead to all potential uses of your logo. How will it look in a wide space versus a narrow space? Will it read well as a thumbnail, and look balanced on a billboard? How will it look on light and dark backgrounds? Will it work just as well in black, as in full color? How does it function on screen, in print, or as a spot decal? Why Image Size Matters and What to Look For

Let's start with this scenario: You’re a start up remodeling company. You need business cards, brochures, signs, and a vehicle wrap that will turn heads as you drive by. You have a picture of one of your best kitchens that showcases your company’s skills. You send this photo to your designer and you start to work on your business cards, since that’s the easiest, right? Your business card design looks so spectacular that you decide that it must be the star of the show on your newly purchased box truck. You tell your designer to take your business card and put the same design on your truck. Uh oh.... your designer tells you that your prized photo can’t be used on the truck because it’s low quality/resolution. How can this be? You just used it on your business card and it was fine.

Sound familiar? If you’ve ever been in this situation, you are not alone. But you’re in luck! We can shed some light on this confusion. Images are like the face of a Rubik’s cube. Some have more squares than others. For instance, take a 3x3 vs an 8x8. When you look at a solved Rubik’s cube, each side of a cube is all the same color, regardless of how many squares there are, but in a larger cube, you have more squares putting that block of color together than in a smaller cube. This is exactly how images work.

For the purposes of this analogy, let’s note some comparisons:

1 Cube = 1 Pixel

1 Square = Dot Per Inch (DPI)/Resolution

HIGH RESOLUTION

High resolution images are the 8x8 cubes of images. They have more DPI (dots per inch) than smaller cubes, meaning there are more pixels in each inch of the image than in a low resolution image. Having more pixels in your image gives your designer room to manipulate the image’s size by taking away pixels and increasing the dimensions. It’s all a balancing act. You are able to increase the images size by decreasing the resolution. High resolution images have a DPI of 300, meaning there are 300 pixels in each inch of the image. High resolution images also have larger physical dimensions (generally 2 MP, aka megapixels, or more).

Note: Because nothing is simple, you can have a low quality image that has high DPI. If BOTH pixel dimensions and DPI are not high, it may not be considered high quality.

LOW RESOLUTION

Low resolution images are the 3x3 cubes of images. They have less DPI than larger cubes, meaning there are less pixels in each inch of the image than in high resolution images. When your image has less pixels, your designer doesn’t have the freedom to resize the image without the image losing quality. Imagine you took a 3x3 cube and tried to pull it apart to make it bigger. It would break. That’s essentially what happens when you blow up a low quality image. The pixels have no way to counteract this and blur. Again, it’s all a balancing act. If your image has a low DPI, there is nothing to balance it when you make it bigger. Low resolution images have a DPI of 72, meaning there are 72 pixels in each inch of the image.

In conclusion, if you have an image that you want to use on both your business card and your box truck, you need a high resolution image, so your designer can manipulate the image’s size to accommodate both templates.

If you’re unsure about your favorite picture’s quality, send it to your designer and they will be more than happy to let you know if your image will work for your project.

I Can't Open It, So I'm Throwing It Away...

Have you ever been asked for a file in an email with an extension that sound made up? If you’ve ever worked with a designer, odds are you have. We know that there are a lot of file types out there and it can be hard to remember which is good for your purpose. Don’t worry! We are here to help!

VECTOR

Vector files are the ultimate design file. This is because they allow your designer to have the most control over your

art and create the best product for you. If your designer asks you for a vector format of your artwork, look for one of these most common file types:

.AI (Adobe Illustrator Document)

This is Adobe Suite specific, so it requires Adobe design software to open. Don’t worry if you can’t open it because we can!

.EPS (Encapsulated Postscript)

This is a more universal vector file that is generally not software specific.

.PDF (Portable Document Format)

This is the document you are probably most familiar with. This type of file is capable of retaining vector artwork, while being able to be opened in non-vector programs. This makes it ideal for most printing and general purposes.

RASTER

Raster files are useful in some cases, and less useful in others. It just depends on your project! They are great for creating photographic imagery, whether it be collage or just a nice picture on the wall. Raster images’ scalability depends on the original image’s size and resolution. (We’ll talk about the specifics later). These are file types you are most likely more familiar with:

.PSD (Photoshop Document)

This is Adobe Suite specific, so it requires Adobe design software to open. This file is the most editable because it retains layers that can be manipulated, instead of having one flat image inside. Don’t worry if you can’t open it because we can!

.PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

This non-editable format is commonly preferred amongst designers because the file type is capable of having transparent backgrounds, which means your image can be used in a more versatile way. You won’t always be limited to just one background color! It’s able to be opened in any photo viewer program.

.JPG/JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

This non-editable format doesn’t hold transparent backgrounds, but that doesn’t mean it’s useless! Most images taken with a phone default to this file type. It’s able to be opened in any photo viewer program.

.GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)

While there is a heavy debate on whether this is pronounced GIF of JIF (you know, like the peanut butter), we can assure you it is

GIF. This format has taken the meme world by storm. Those animated GIFs you see, are called GIFs for a reason. The unique thing about this file format is its ability to show animated or moving images.

.TIFF (Tagged Image File)

This image type is very common in the design world. It’s a raster file that is capable of saving at much larger sizes without losing image quality when compressed. Basically, if you start out with a large image, you’ll keep your large image when you save it this way.

Designer Speak 101:

If you’ve ever worked with a graphic designer, you’ve probably heard them use words like “vector”, “raster”, “high-resolution”, “negative space”, “visual hierarchy” ... and thought, “What in tarnation are they talking about?” We get it. It’s a lot... and we decided to study these terms for a living!

“Why do I need to know designer lingo, that’s what I pay you for?” Well my friend, that can be summed up in two words. Cost. Reduction. Understanding your designer’s lingo means less miscommunication between you and your designer when working on your project. It’s like going to the doctor and telling them you feel bad, but being unable to identify your symptoms and expecting them to know what is wrong with you. It can be frustrating! Knowing the lingo leads to more productive revisions and less time going in circles trying to get the vision in your head onto your designer’s screen. After all, both parties want the design to be pure perfection! With that said, let’s talk about the most common terms you’re going to hear your designer say to you:

VECTOR:

Vector artwork is a type of artwork that uses the power of math and points to create graphics that can be scaled

infinitely without losing any image quality. Your image will look exactly the same whether it be on a small business card or on the side of your box truck. Perfect quality every time!

RASTER:

You encounter raster artwork everyday without even knowing it! Raster artwork uses pixels to create it’s picture. The pictures you take on your phone are raster files. These have a predetermined maximum size. There are loopholes to change the size of your picture, which your designer knows all about. However, they cant’ work miracles, so they need high-resolution images to work their magic.

HIGH-RESOLUTION:

“ I took this picture on my phone, so surely it will work right? ” Well, not always. As mentioned, raster images have a predetermined maximum size, so they can only be manipulated so far before the image looks like garbage. When your designer says “high-resolution”, they generally mean an image that is of large pixel dimensions and high DPI (Dots Per Inch). The DPI is what gives the image its quality. HIGH DPI images have more dots in one inch square than a LOW DPI image. Bigger is better right? Ideally, you want your pictures taken with a professional quality camera, not a smart phone. While some smart phones can take pictures of large pixel dimensions, their DPI is low, which makes enlarging the picture nearly impossible without the image becoming pixelated or blurry. If you’re unsure of your images’ quality, your designer will be able to tell you, just send it over!

NEGATIVE SPACE:

Imagine that moment when you pull into your driveway. You turn off the car and the radio, and sit there in complete silence. You’re just there with nothing going on, and it’s magical. Negative space is that special area of your design with absolutely nothing in it. This is what gives your design balance. If everything is crammed and as large as possible, your viewer has no idea where to start and has a harder time digesting what you are wanting them to, which kind of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? Negative space is your design’s happy place.

VISUAL HIERARCHY

EVERYTHING. DOES. NOT. HAVE. TO. BE. AS. BIG. AS. HUMANLY. POSSIBLE. (You can tell we feel very strongly

about this.) If you tell your designer your logo needs to be bigger, and your website, and your phone number, you know what... make it all HUGE because the information is SUPER IMPORTANT, then to your viewer, nothing is important. Visual hierarchy is what tells your viewer what is the most important thing that they should walk away from your design knowing. For those of us who have ever made a recipe from Pinterest, we know that we have 80 years of biography to read before we get to the good stuff, but none of us want to know what Karen’s life was like before she made this life changing recipe. We scroll as fast as we can to get to the thing that looks like a recipe. We are able to identify the break between Karen’s life story and the recipe because the visual hierarchy allows us to detect it. Bold headers, larger fonts, different colored text. All these things help create visual breaks and importance.

Presenting our GoldRushRally Ford Mustang GT350 from the Team Shift F6.

Our designer LeeAnn Obermeyer, absolutely SLAYED this project and produced this killer wrap. Our customer was inspired by the Ford Mustang GT4 by Ford Performance but with a "grunge" and "rust" twist. Together, the customer and designer came up with a unique and one-of-a-kind custom wrap that was race ready!
